5 New Year's Resolutions to Use Music for Self-Care

Hands up... Who has had a challenging year???

2022 has been a particularly challenging year for many, especially with the rise of fuel prices, and the holidays can be especially stressful.

As we move into 2023, I want you to remember to take care of yourself and make sure your mental health is in a good place.

One great way to do this is through music! Now in my previous BLOG, I mentioned that I like to set my new years resolutions in the first week of December. Still, If you have not done it yet, I want to share with you the benefits of music for your mental health, and by simply doing one of these five things in 2023, you can significantly improve your well-being.

Setting resolutions with music can also help you stay focused on your goals while providing an outlet for creative expression.

Here are five great resolutions that use music as a tool for self-care:

1. Listen to one new album every month - We all get stuck in ruts when it comes to listening habits, so why not challenge yourself this year by listening to one new album every month? Make an effort to listen outside your comfort zone and discover something you never knew you loved! Bonus points if you include some foreign music in your rotation.

2. Learn a few basic chords on the piano - Learning an instrument can be intimidating, but don’t let that stop you! Start by learning some basic chords on the piano so you can start playing along with your favourite songs. With enough practice and determination, you’ll soon have a song of your own ready to go!
3. Write a song - Writing a song takes time and patience, but it’s totally worth it in the end! Whether you write lyrics or compose instrumental pieces, putting words down on paper (or typing them out!) will help bring out feelings that are hard to express otherwise. Plus, if you feel like showing off your work, there are plenty of online platforms where you can share your songs with others!4. Take singing lessons - If writing isn’t quite your thing, but singing is more up your alley, why not take some singing lessons? Not only will this help improve your vocal range and technique, but having someone knowledgeable guide you through the process can be incredibly rewarding and confidence-boosting too!

5. Go see live music - There may still be social distancing guidelines in place in some countries, but that doesn’t mean live shows are completely off-limits! Look up some local concerts or open mics near you and get out there—you won’t regret it! Immersing yourself in live music is always an energizing experience that will remind you why music is such an essential part of our lives.

So what are you going to do?

Self-care is essential during times of stress and uncertainty, so why not make 2023 the year of using music as therapy? Whether it’s learning how to play a few chords or going out to hear some live music at local venues (safely!), these five resolutions will help get you started on the path towards taking better care of yourself through the power of music!
