A Step-by-Step Guide to Singing and Playing White Christmas on Piano

Hands up….. Who is here LOVES the song “White Christmas”?

It's a classic Christmas song, right?  That's why it has been covered countless times by some of the greatest vocalists and instrumentalists in history. It’s one of my all-time favourites to sing and play, and because it's slow, it's a delight to play! So who wants to learn this classic???

If you're a beginner piano vocalist, don't worry—I'll walk you through it step by step so you can learn to sing and play this romantic and festive tune from start to finish. Let's get started!

🔔 Part 1: Learning the Melody 🔔

The first thing you need to do is familiarise yourself with the melody of “White Christmas”. Now i don’t mean just listening to it once! You have to have this baby on repeat till you know the melody inside out! Start by listening to recordings of the song and paying attention to how the melody moves up and down. A tip for you…After you have an idea of how it sounds, test yourself by getting a karaoke track from youtube and try singing to the track! If you can’t you will need to keep learning the melody.

Next, try working out the melody on the piano or keyboard by ear as slowly as possible until you get comfortable with it. This will really help with your vocal pitch! You can sing and play the melody but only for this part only! 

🎄Part 2: Learning the Chords 🎄

Once you've got the melody down, it's time to learn the chords that accompany it. Start by finding a chord chart for “White Christmas” You can download the Lead sheet HERE.

Then, practice playing each chord slowly and accurately until it feels natural. As always, take your time—seriously!!!! it may take some time for your fingers to adjust if they aren't used to certain chords yet! When you feel confident about your ability to play each chord correctly, move on to part three.

Now that you know both the melody and chords of “White Christmas”, combine them together whilst paying the root note in your left hand! Try singing along while playing each chord simultaneously; this will help train your ears so that they become more familiar with how these two elements sound together in this particular song. Once you feel confident about singing and playing at the same time, practice switching between chords quickly while still being able to sing and hit all of the notes in the melody easily. This can be tricky at first but I promise it will all be worth it!!! Just don't give up—with enough practice and dedication, you will sound brilliant in no time!
